How we make (our children’s) dreams come true together as a family
“Dreams are for dreamers” Yeah, right – and the earth is flat? If you’re one of those parents who just smile at such sayings and continue living the dream and continue traveling the world with their children, then welcome to the pioneer club!
In a world where we adults – but even worse- our children are expected to function – sit still, be good, and please don’t ask too many questions – space for real dreams is often in short supply. Far too many parents still let government and school dictate the pace; the curriculum and grades are the measure of all things, and if your child doesn’t fit exactly into the proverbial “box,” then they and also the parents just keep pushing until they’re somehow squeezed in.
Is there still room for individuality, creativity, or even adventure? Not really.
But – and now comes the big, colorful, loud but – there are other ways. We know this because we’ve been living it for 25 years.
Free Learning, Unschooling and Worldschooling Instead of being stuck
As a family, we’ve been traveling the world for decades. Not just geographically, but also educationally. It was clear to us early on: We don’t want our children to just learn anything, we want them to learn what truly interests them. And that’s often easier around a campfire in Mexico, in the jungles of Costa Rica, or counting shells on Thai islands than in a stuffy classroom.
We’re worldschoolers, unschoolers, digital nomads—or, as some say, a little different. And honestly, we like it that way. Because every day we see how our children blossom when they feel like they’re being taken seriously. When we make plans together, share our dreams—and then make them come true.
Adventures Instead of a Schedule
Our children have always been fascinated by the ocean, so we moved to the warm, tropical Pacific Ocean for a few years to our “home beach” where we were able to watch dolphins and whales. Our oldest went through a phase where they were fascinated by Egyptian culture – so off to Arabia and Egypt! And when one of us suddenly wanted to know how to make chocolate, a short time later we found ourselves on a cocoa plantation in Guatemala. Why not?
For us, unschooling also means clear rules, patience, and a good dose of improvisation. But above all, it means freedom. Trust. And real life.
Dreams have no age – and no curriculum
Many people believe that dreams are “done” at some point. From a certain age, the motto is: “Now let’s be realistic!” But what does that actually mean? We believe that children, in particular, are realistic – because they sense what’s good for them. Because they don’t yet think through a thousand social filters. Because they are brave, curious, and full of life.
Our job as parents is not to drive this courage out of them. Our job is to celebrate it. To accompany it. And – yes – to sometimes carry it through South America with a heavy backpack. And that’s exactly how we do it.
Dreaming together is the best thing
In the end, it’s not just about school or not. It’s about attitude. About the question of how we want to live with our children. Whether we’re ready to truly listen to them – or just pretend. Whether we take their dreams seriously – or dismiss them with a “You’re too young for that.”
We say: No one is too young for big dreams. And no one is too old to make them come true. Especially not when you live them together – as a family, on the go, open, curious, and with a good supply of raw chocolate in your backpack.
Do you feel that school can’t be everything?
